“The central idea isn’t that important… it’s what you do with it.”[1]https://youtu.be/mojMBWGhrCs?list=PLVF4WscnYxkRAjIzGnBGfZdB817SThya8&t=1611— WikiDot user and SCP author Grigori Karpin
“Anomaly As Vehicle” is a broad compositional philosophy and methodology that considers the anomaly of a containment fiction entry as secondary or negligible with respect to the article’s narrative intent and focus. While more popular in the modern-day alongside narratively elaborate entries, the approach has existed since 2009. Notable examples include SCP-093 (“Red Sea Object”) and SCP-5000 (“Why?”). The philosophy is usually presented in contrast with Series 1-style articles, wherein the anomaly itself (i.e. the description) was the focus, rather than a narrative built off of that anomaly, and one that the anomaly introduces/enables.
Quotes
“… Do you have an idea for a narrative? And then, you can just kinda make that anomaly work for it.”
“That’s right… The narrative should not be in service of being able to have your spooky monster. If you have to have a spooky monster, it should be because it makes a narrative better.”[2]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mojMBWGhrCs&list=PLVF4WscnYxkRAjIzGnBGfZdB817SThya8&t=1396s — Grigori Karpin & HarryBlank (respectively), from Simply Creative People, Episode 2, 2022
“The wiki as a whole becomes much more enjoyable when you realize that nearly everything in an article is there to fit a compelling narrative and not to be a functionally realistic document detailing an anomalous whatever.”[3]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76858/scp-682#post-4750776 — djkaktus, 2020
“The issue with that is the issue with many narrative-heavy scips: The Foundation simply doesn’t know, and there’s no way to effectively make them know, without an exposition dump somewhere (which I am not a fan of at all)”[4]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-1283391/scp-218#post-2340323— Djoric in 2015
