Eberstrom

Early author Eberstrom’s WikiDot profile.

“Eberstrom was definitely one of the most influential members of the old wiki, yet has been buried in the dustbin of history. Looking through many of his posts on the old discussion pages, it is obvious he was very influential, and was well known by DrGears, Kain, and FritzWillie. His 001 proposal was one of the first on the site, and the oldest one to survive from EditThis(In -ARC form).” — History of the Universe: Part One[1]https://archive.ph/hD7IW#selection-1507.0-1507.390

Eberstrom was an early containment fiction author, active on 4chan’s /x/, the SCP Wiki EditThis, and the SCP Wiki WikiDot circa 2008. They are most known for their SCP-001, which was one of the first SCP-001 proposals. They are also the author of SCP-147, the initial SCP-402, and SCP-695. [2]https://web.archive.org/web/20080518020028/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/User:Eberstrom Post-EditThis works include SCP-368, the initial SCP-744 (now ARC’d), and SCP-416.[3]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-77409/new-scp-announcements#post-284729[4]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-95883/two-new-posts He contributed significantly to SCP-169 (“The Leviathan”),[5]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-169, see edit history and is self-credited in helping with SCP-116 (“Brittle Boy”).[6]https://web.archive.org/web/20090601104214/http://www.wikidot.com:80/user:info/eberstrom[7]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-116, Eberstrom is not present in edit history Eberstrom did not write tales or supplemental material, but is self-credited as assisting with “Mobile Task Force Omega 7 R&R Handout”.[8]http://scpclassic.wikidot.com/mobile-task-force-omega-7-r-r-handout

Eberstrom was an early article critic who strove to raise the standards of SCP articles beyond prior creepypasta series, e.g. the quality of the SCP-001 slot.[9]https://web.archive.org/web/20080519001444/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001/Proposal:Taisaijin[10]http://web.archive.org/web/20080617062225/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-075 As a writer, they helped advanced the polish of modern clinical tone.[11]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17503.0-17647.1231[12]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-169, rev. 2 For example, Eberstrom rewrote major portions of the initial SCP-169 (“The Leviathan”) to include more believable clinical tone.[13]https://www.diffchecker.com/9O4kQMPC/ They can commonly be seen on talk pages in EditThis archives.[14]http://web.archive.org/web/*/https://editthis.info/scp_wiki/*

SCPs

“I’m Eberstrom. I’ve been around for a while – I remember and contributed to the original SCP thread on /x/ – but I’ve been on hiatus for about six months. I’m only now getting back into the SCP project. I wrote quite a few SCP’s, probably the best of which is the anachronistic television.” — Eberstrom[15]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-90762/new-members#post-279532

SCP-001

“I have an idea in which a patch of land, of area around 50 acres, continually shifts locations around the world, staying a reasonable distance away from cities. One week it’ll be in the Arizona desert, the next up in the northern Canada tundra, etc. Anyway, in this idea, Site 19 was built in order to prevent people accidentally wandering into this patch of land. What does Anon think?” — Eberstrom[16]https://web.archive.org/web/20080418042145/https://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001

Eberstrom’s Proposal is significant in the history of SCP in that it is the oldest existent 001 proposal on the Wikidot site (in the form of an -ARC), and it introduced the idea that 001s could/should explain an important piece of Foundation lore.

Per available time stamps, Eberstrom’s SCP-001 proposal was likely the second legitimate 001 proposal on EditThis after Taisajin’s, and is taken to be the second recorded “official” 001 proposal. It was likely written in early March 2008,[17]http://web.archive.org/web/20080616233457/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001 or last edited then.[18]https://archive.ph/RQCUo#selection-193.0-207.14[19]https://web.archive.org/web/20080517171338/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/SCP-001/Proposal:Eberstrom While ultimately non-viable, the proposal was the only one from EditThis that survived to the SCP Wiki,[20]https://web.archive.org/web/20081016155441/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/proposals-for-scp-001 and has served as the inspiration for numerous other works of containment fiction, such as Scantron’s Proposal (2011) and SCP-7001 “Site-19” (2022).[21]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76907/eberstrom-s-proposal-arc#post-1276656[22]https://archive.ph/IJc1Y#selection-1475.0-1475.247[23]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-7001 Although explicitly stated by the author commentary in the former case and not in the latter, SCP-7001’s anomaly is itself Site-19, and recasts Eberstrom’s initial concept of continual shifting of location to prevent people from accessing it. Eberstrom is recalled by name in SCP-7001’s comment section as being direct inspiration.[24]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-15049534/scp-7001#post-5522235[25]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-15049534/scp-7001#post-5539375

Eberstrom’s idea for SCP-001 was suggested by other users prior to the SCP-001 being written, and with one user comparing it to the pre-existing Arcadia creepypasta.[26]https://web.archive.org/web/20080418042145/https://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001[27]https://www.creepypasta.com/arcadia-the-lost-state/ Catalyst’s Proposal, which was posted after Eberstrom’s also attempted to cast Site-19 as SCP-001.[28]http://web.archive.org/web/20080617060041/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-001/Proposal:Catalyst Taisajin’s Proposal, also incorporated Site-19.[29]https://web.archive.org/web/20080517171343/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/SCP-001/Proposal:Taisaijin

Eberstrom’s SCP-001 proposal has been archived on the SCP Wiki (WikiDot), as it plays a pivotal role in other cannons and projects, such as the Classical Revival Series.[30]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/eberstrom-s-proposal-arc It was drafted for rewrite in 2013.[31]https://archive.ph/eCkoz

SCP-147 – “Anachronistic Television”

SCP-147 first existed on /x/, and marks the first known introduction of Eberstrom by name.[32]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17503.0-17533.74 Eberstrom included it onto the EditThis wiki; it was ported to the WikiDot in July 2008.[33]https://web.archive.org/web/20080511101152/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-147[34]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-147 Its image was removed in 2020 for being non-compliant with the site’s Creative Commons license.

SCP-402 (Non-Viable)

Initially posted to EditThis, SCP-402 was later ported to the SCP Wiki.[35]https://web.archive.org/web/20080511101236/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-402 It has underwent at least two rewrites: one by WikIDot user quantumapples, and the most current version by Communism_Will_Win in October 2016, the latter as a result of it falling into deletion range.[36]https://web.archive.org/web/20160925145801/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-402[37]https://archive.ph/V5JXw[38]https://archive.ph/V5JXw#selection-1535.0-1535.150

SCP-695 (Non-Viable)

The initial SCP-695 (“A Remarkable Handbag”) was posted to EditThis on 27 January 2008, and later transferred to WikiDot.[39]https://web.archive.org/web/20080429201113/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-695[40]https://web.archive.org/web/20080518020028/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-695[41]https://web.archive.org/web/20090108222028/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-695. It was eventually deleted sometime in late 2009 and was replaced.[42]https://web.archive.org/web/20090817070335/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-695

SCP-744-ARC

SCP-774-ARC is a vaguely-humanoid monster made of scrap metal that continuously ate metal objects. In the article, “Able” (SCP-076) was released by the Foundation in order to neutralize SCP-744-ARC, which was eventually seen as a relic of a bygone, lolFoundation era:[43]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-95948/scp-744-arc#post-1485823

“This feels like the product of a bygone era, that was left behind as progress marched on. Those were the wild and wooly days, where researchers ran free and untethered to seriousness, and you could write an article where a sumerian working for the shadow government went and killed a giant rust monster” — RJB_R

It entered deletion range in 2012, and was -ARC’d instead for being “a neat, albeit kind of dumb, piece of site history”.[44]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-95948/scp-744-arc#post-1485885

On SCP-744-ARC, Eberstrom wrote:[45]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-95948/scp-744-arc#post-280430

“But as with all of my SCP’s, the explosions/aftermaths are based on real events – there was a sugar factory that exploded in [REDACTED] a few years ago, which in my mind is where this happened.”

Trivia

Eberstrom praised DrClef’s SCP-001 proposal (“Gate Guardian”) and is quoted in the comments as saying they are ashamed that their SCP-001 proposal is still up.[46]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-95164/dr-clef-s-proposal#post-282698

A character named after Eberstrom was included as a fictional character in other early SCPs written by another SCP author.[47]https://archive.ph/7Xzzt#selection-1691.1-1691.17 Eberstrom was also made into a verbatim character in later tales on the SCP Wiki WikiDot.[48]https://archive.ph/NWkYw#selection-893.0-893.10

Eberstrom was the first recorded SCP author to include the very-common “invariably” in an SCP document.[49]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17647.355-17647.488

Eberstrom added the initial images to SCP-169, the Leviathan.[50]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-169, rev. 2 The spectrograph remains in the article to this day (July 2023).

Eberstrom’s was favored by some users on the SCP-001 talk page for explaining a piece of lore:[51]http://web.archive.org/web/20080616233457/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001

“I really prefer Eberstrom’s proposal, because it actually explains how this entire, apparently freakin’ huge, facility remains completely unknown to the public”

Eberstrom’s proposal, the only surviving one from the EditThis days, was Site 19, explained it as “a patch of land, of area around 50 acres, continually shifts locations around the world, staying a reasonable distance away from cities… built in order to prevent people accidentally wandering into this patch of land.”[52]http://web.archive.org/web/20080418042145/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001 By 2011, this was voted into the negatives and was eventually ARC’d, with the expectation that it would be rewritten. Within the year, user Scantron/Communism will win wrote an SCP-001 proposal (“The Foundation”) that was initially a rewrite of Eberstrom’s propsal.[53]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-400333/scantron-s-proposal#post-1280139 Rewrites of this were discussed in the following years.[54]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-632775/rewrite-of-eberstrom-s-proposal Eleven years later, author PlaguePJP wrote an article title “Site-19” for the SCP-7000 contest, which was inspired by Eberstrom’s proposal.[55]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-15049534/scp-7001#post-5522235[56]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-15049534/scp-7001#post-5539375 Unrelated to this, a user by the name of “Plague” existed on the EditThis, in 2008. This Plague is archived on the SCP-001 talk page as saying: “I think SCP-Numberless would make a good SCP-1 or possibly SCP-0, but that growing facility is a good one too.”[57]http://web.archive.org/web/20080616233457/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001
