Society for Containment Fiction Mission Statement
Whatever kind of curiosity drove you to this site — whether by discovery, recommendation, contempt or merely an accident —, chances are you are at least peripherally aware of “containment fiction.”
Containment fiction is as beautiful as it is chaotic, allowing for a myriad of settings, genres and styles blending together with colorful fluidity behind clinical terminology. In some ways it is a survivor of pre-2010s internet horror — best exemplified through creepypasta —, its audience and producers are rarely professional writers. Young amateurs are the closest there is to “great masters” and critics of the craft, and its communities are largely formed by the same demographic that once inhabited creepypasta: starry-eyed and eager, usually aware of containment fiction through secondary sources, they all wish to try their hand at riding lightning and catching it in a bottle.
The formal nature of containment fiction communities means that they are commanded by a reduced demographic of community leaders and administrators that remains consistent between them. One could read lists of staff members and non-administrative leaders from such communities and repeatedly find the same names, as if taken from a single 150-to-200-item list. Even if not directly in administrative power, the influence each member of such a list exerts is formidable: admired by the less influential users that desire their status, it is safe to assume their perspective will mold that of the surrounding community. In this context, achievements and status directly correlate with influential power, with over-achieving contributors being even more powerful in this regard than those with administrative responsibilities.
Thus, this “upper class” not only controls the content — which parallels very well to a monetary resource in the communities that value it the most — but the information. With enough time, any truth can be established or dismantled for the benefit of this elite, who seek to expand their influence toward the periphery, with administrative power moving up the hierarchical pyramid until the apex is functionally in control.
It is our hope that the Containment Fiction Wiki will serve as a place in which information on containment fiction can be preserved and freely accessed, without limitations or restriction.
The Society for Containment Fiction is composed from members of the larger containment fiction communities. Our perspective may be inevitably colored as a result of our personal relationships with the fiction and the communities surrounding it. Nonetheless we strive to here be as neutral and factual as possible. We provide citations for all of our claims in hopes of establishing this clearly.
If you wish to express criticism at the site, its structure or content, we greatly appreciate your input, positive or negative.
And most importantly:
We will not be silenced.
