/x/ is the “Paranormal” board on 4chan, an anonymous image and text-sharing website. It is notable in the context of Containment Fiction for being the spawning point for the SCP Wiki, RPC Authority, and Backrooms/Tech Support communities. Although Channer culture is not a predominant part of these communities and they all quickly left the platform to make their own sites, the influence of /x/ is undeniable in their creation and subsequent histories. In addition to being the source of containment fiction, /x/ was also the primary online location for the sharing of creepypasta, which is the direct forebear of the genre.
Native & Surviving SCPs
As of writing (March 2024), 37 SCP articles originally submitted to /x/ still exist on the SCP Wiki (Wikidot), whether in their original form, rewritten, or -ARC’d.
Note: These entries are taken to be native to /x/ if their content exists prior to EditThis archival dates, and is found within the holistic archive of SCP content on 4chan’s /x/.[126] See a comprehensive spreadsheet for more information and methods, below:

SCP Threads
Note: All authors are unknown unless otherwise stated. The phrase “non-viable” when used below indicates an early attempt at an SCP that would later be curated, and does not currently occupy its stated numerical designation. Numerical designations that do not abide by what would become the convention (e.g. “SCP-23”) do not need to be clarified as “non-viable”. The 4chan threads linked to contain numerous statements that are not politically correct. Readers should exercise caution as they see fit. The archive this information is found in — the bluesoul archive — is likely missing posts, and the following is not necessarily an exhaustive and complete history. The archive does not examine SCP-keyword-matched threads on /x/ after 2008.
SCP, and arguably the SCP Series, began on /x/. A number of developments that would later see ubiquitous use first appeared on /x/ threads, including character-driven logs,[9]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-1781.17-1781.79 in-universe role playing,[10]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3747.30-3747.328 cross-testing,[11]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-2177.498-2177.542 decommissioning,[12]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3575.43-3575.308 collaborative editing,[13]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-7643.121-7643.270[14]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-2469.30-2469.55 headcannon,[15]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3661.30-3661.320 discovery logs,[16]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3919.10-3919.1875 redaction,[17]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-4359.49-4359.554 a site dedicated to such objects,[18]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-6143.10-6143.117[19]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-7997.39-7997.253[20]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-7203.10-7203.173 the philosophy of horror / writing horror,[21]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-5495.30-5495.233 the common typo that would birth the Shark Punching Center,[22]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-713.61-713.74[23]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-7031.10-7031.51 containment breaches,[24]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-5161.10-5161.25[25]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-5133.390-5133.580[26]https://archive.ph/rHdvx object classes,[27]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3987.182-3987.230 D-Class personnel,[28]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3987.10-3987.26, incident reports,[29]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-5133.42-5133.71[30]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-19913.0-19913.71 the Overseers and Security Clearance Levels,[31]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-2813.0-2975.7[32]https://archive.vn/QNbYp#selection-2005.67-2005.158[33]https://archive.vn/QNbYp#selection-2367.0-2367.231 testing logs,[34]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17257.0-17267.7 audio transcriptions,[35]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-12081.765-12081.1273 credential locks,[36]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-13037.1785-13037.1842 journal entries,[37]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-21957.395-22301.1004 immersive in-universe elements such as warning notices & console commands,[38]https://archive.ph/mwFGh#selection-4471.9-4471.23[39]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-4255.0-4255.788 coordinated migration to an external, site-dedicated collection,[40]e.g, https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-7997.273-7997.466 article critique (“crit”) and idea brainstorming,[41]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10253.0-10511.64, https://archive.ph/SQJDm#selection-1929.30-1929.223 the use of subdesignations,[42]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-11387.9-11387.24 Joke articles and the “J” designation,[43]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2699.0-2699.262[44]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-3261.0-3261.112 a collective intent to separate SCP entries from elements of traditional story telling,[45]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-9277.0-9277.354 suggestions for the standardization of the metric system, of proofreading, and of curation,[46]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-23253.0-23253.156[47]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17854.0-17923.214[48]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-11129.0-11129.184[49]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-2091.0-2091.83 neutralized anomalies,[50]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9737.10-9737.193 along with numerous other qualities — whether in discussion, foreshadowing, action, or all three.
By January 2008, writing was shifting towards EditThis, though SCPs were still posted to /x/ with the hopes of being ported to the new wiki. The developing format would be memetic enough to generate the observation of tropes.[51]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2501.1-2509.213 For example, in January an anon writes:[52]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/453291.xml
“Does EVERY SINGLE SCP have to have the exact same shit in it? “No less than 3 people”, “chamber must be flooded with XXX Gas/Liquid”, and the effects are always spontaneous insanity and hemorrhaging”
June 22nd, 2007[53]https://archive.ph/z3QMp
The /x/ thread containing the first SCP, SCP-173, is #140042.
From the bluesoul archive:
“The SCP Universe was launched with a draft of SCP-173 on 2007-06-22 as thread 140042. This of course gave us many conventions that we still use now:
-

referring to the entity by it’s [sic] SCP designation throughout the article”[54]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/history.html
The response to SCP-173 was largely positive, with commenters requesting more, and praising it as creepy and intriguing with an air of mystery and for being written in the style of a clinical report that differentiated it from other creepypastas.[55]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-1609.37-1609.238[56]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3135.30-3135.235[57]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-4445.141-4445.191[58]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-4531.10-4531.84[59]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-6773.57-6773.181[60]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-7471.30-7471.157 Criticism called the prose “an official report written by a high-schooler,”[61]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-2383.10-2383.338 a rip-off of either the Weeping Angels seen from a then-recent Dr. Who episode,[62]((https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-1867.11-1953.51[63]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-4893.0-5065.117 or of creatures seen in The Shining.[64]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-5409.10-5409.219 For some, the image was underwhelming.[65]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-2555.10-2555.109 Mild typographical/grammatical errors were pointed out.[66]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-921.10-921.36[67]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-2039.10-2039.214 There was also general commentary and discussion asking follow up questions to the logic internal to the document.
A pseudo-anonymous S. S. Walrus/Moto42 can be seen in the thread responding:
“Sleep deprived first drafts tend to suck a bit. It’s meant to sound like an official report, and I’ll admit that english grammar isn’t my strongest subject. Thanks for all the positive responses.”[68]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3135.30-3135.235
Discussion in this thread inquired about registering webpage domains for Site 19. In lieu of not being able financially to register a “www.site19.com”, a 4chan user created a “Site 19” forum group on Invisionfree, which predated any other attempt to collate SCPs (i.e. EditThis) by half a year.[69]See Cooldude971’s essay on the Invisionfree forum for more information and page archives.
This thread arguably saw the first tale; a short story about the discovery of SCP-173 from the perspective of a United States Air Force Captain (hereafter referenced as “the USAF tale”).[70]https://archive.ph/QD9UF#selection-1539.0-1539.101
SCP-173’s original thread would ultimately be deleted on June 24, 2007.[71]http://web.archive.org/web/20181018022231/https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/site_19/scp-173-t1.html It was reposted to 4chan’s /b/ board the same day.[72]https://archive.ph/Ziasv The next months would see numerous threads dedicated to requesting reposts of SCP-173’s image and associated text.
July — August 2007
Threads in these months include #166244 , #166512, #168963, #168982, #169303, #173879, #177539, #181492, #186182, #204891.#208373, #213938, #214375, #217058, #241189, #244048, #245941, and #247552.
In most, SCP-173 is requested, both explicitly and as part of general, recommended, and quality creepypastas. Requests usually begin with the associated image “Untitled 2004”. Some request the text of SCP-173 itself, while other requests are only for the image. Izumi Kato is identified as the original artist on several occasions.[73]e.g. https://archive.ph/pT6La#selection-5833.0-5833.142 The aforementioned USAF tale is posted alongside SCP-173 text. SCP-173 itself appears in two versions: the original and a modified version that is widely considered inferior to the original (see July 17, 2007). During this time, SCP-173 has a less formal name, “the golem”.[74]e.g. https://archive.ph/1ObaG By mid July, the creepypasta has garnered an underground reputation, and became memetic, with references to it appearing casually in multiple threads.[75]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/192081.xml
July 11, 2007[76]https://archive.ph/XaSAR
In #166244, a user starts the thread requesting “Untitled 2004”, the image posted with SCP-173; the user also asks for “the story” that goes with it. The user was unable to find the image on a Google search, and turned to /x/ as a “last hope” to find the image and story again.[77]https://archive.ph/XaSAR#selection-989.0-989.106 An anonymous user claims to know the original author personally, and is surprised that the creepypasta is popular. This user reports he will ask the original author to post it.[78]https://archive.ph/XaSAR#selection-1064.0-1161.49 Both SCP-173 and the accompanying USAF tale are reproduced. A link is shared to the aforementioned Invisionfree Site 19 forum.[79]https://archive.ph/XaSAR#selection-3033.0-3033.74 A suggestion is made to create SCPs 001 through 172, as a series reminiscent of The Holders.[80]https://archive.ph/XaSAR#selection-6355.0-6355.55
July 13, 2007[81]https://archive.ph/YSyqh
Three threads mentioning SCP are created this date, #168963, #168982, and #169303. All begin with a request for SCP-173 and/or its image. All threads are requests for SCP-173’s image, “Untitled 2004”, for the USAF tale, and for the text of SCP-173. At this time, the USAF tale is given more priority than SCP-173, with it being posted first in many cases. A discussion takes place about the object, and its presentation in a militaristic format. A link to the Invisionfree Site 19 forum is shared.
July 17, 2007[82]https://archive.ph/JcRMM
“SCP-173 is already an /x/ meme.”[83]https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-5499.30-5499.60
This thread is #173879.
SCP-173 is reposted with no request, but this version is heavily modified, keeping the general format but rewording most sentences and referring to the object as “the SCP-173”.[84]https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-825.0-825.1947 Next to its designation is the added phrase “(aka “The Golem”)”. This version is less militaristic, and mimics more common creepypasta compositional styles of the time (e.g. The Holders). The changed text is recognized and disapproved of by multiple observers.[85]https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-1217.0-1217.99[86]https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-5413.0-5413.68[87]https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-9885.30-9885.221 The thread largely derails into argumentation unrelated to SCP-173.
Racist versions of SCP-173 are also posted.[88]CONTENT WARNING, RACIAL SLURS AND PREJUDICE: https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-5317.0-5317.1949[89]CONTENT WARNING, RACIAL SLURS AND PREJUDICE: https://archive.ph/JcRMM#selection-10143.0-10143.1963
August 27, 2007[90]https://archive.vn/0Rrvm
This thread is #244048.
It begins with a request for “Untitled 2004”, the image associated with SCP-173. It explicitly is not asking for “the pasta”, though the incorrect version is eventually posted.[91]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/244048.xml[92]https://archive.vn/0Rrvm#selection-1255.0-1255.1992 The original and correct version is also shared, here called “the short version”, after someone notes the modified version “left out a few god lines”.[93]https://archive.vn/0Rrvm#selection-1338.1-1351.1474[94]https://archive.vn/0Rrvm#selection-729.0-729.279 The thread ends with users asking for more information about SCP-173.
The thread features this claim, which is unverified:
“Originally, that SPC-173 bullshit was taken from an old ‘classified’ military report which was on the same website of a guy who claimed to be able to travel in time. I lost the link, but it never had a picture.”[95]https://archive.vn/0Rrvm#selection-729.0-729.279
August 28, 2007
This thread is #245941.
It begins with a request for SCP-173, referred to as “the golem”. Other users also request it, and insist that someone must have saved it.[96]https://archive.vn/zyetv#selection-815.10-815.183[97]https://archive.vn/zyetv#selection-1051.0-1051.73 The original version of SCP-173 is shared along with “Untitled 2004”, which users express gratitude for.[98]https://archive.vn/zyetv#selection-1545.0-1545.1417)((https://archive.vn/zyetv#selection-1641.0-1641.105
A “www.scp-project.ch” is mentioned as possibly being related to SCP-173.[99]This is not the case, as the site dates back prior to SCP-173’s initial publication, and does not seem to have to do with SCP-173. The acronym appears to be incidental. See … Continue reading
September 2007
Three threads regarding SCP are made in the month of September 2007: #255561, #256661, and #260234. “Untitled 2004” and SCP-173 are requested, and associated concepts (e.g. no blinking, neck snapping) are memetically recalled.[100]https://archive.vn/J3NrS#selection-493.6-501.48 There is more speculation and intrigue about the image’s origins and the supplied story. These threads see the first attempt to vary SCP-173 and create a collaborative project.
September 5, 2007[101]https://archive.ph/wxQgG
This /x/ thread is #256661. It marks the foray into alternate SCP items, and informally marks the beginning of containment fiction as a memetic genre larger than simply SCP-173. There is increased demand for a semblance of clinical tone, as would befit a scientific or pseudo-governmental organization.[102]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-5023.31-5023.332
The thread begins with a new (non-viable) SCP entry, SCP-246, by an anonymous author. This was also a “living statue” and was more poorly received.[103]https://archive.ph/wxQgG [104]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-1063.348-1063.440 It did not survive later transfers. However it is notable in that it represents the moment that containment fiction became a fully memetic, transmitted, and collaborative project that followed certain limits in order to define itself.
The discussion saw the first mention of an “SCP-1”,[105]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-3071.190-3071.213 as well as the idea of filling up blocks of numbers, and then creating more once filled.[106]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-3425.55-3425.207 This thread also saw more direct collaboration, with numerous posters rewriting large portions of the SCP-246 to make it more unique, and of higher quality.
Subsequent entries appeared in the thread, including 078 (a sculpture of a man in a hood),[107]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-4199.10-4199.712 SCP-122 (a statue that hit people based on their political preferences, specifically right-wing individuals),[108]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-4467.26-4467.157 188 (a zombie marine animal),[109]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-4563.27-4563.642 239 (arguably the first -J entry, the humorous designation given to the Communist party),[110]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-4697.0-4745.595 062 (a mind control device, arguably the first compulsion entry),[111]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-4841.0-4841.883 065 (a two-foot tall statue that speaks two phrases in Korean repetitively),[112]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-5643.28-5643.1260 069 (a five-foot tall statue, written in what would be deemed a -J format (and insensitive) by today’s standards),[113]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-6995.0-6995.1508 and 135 (“an animate statue of extreme aggression”),[114]https://archive.ph/wxQgG#selection-7693.167-7693.215 all of which were deemed subpar and did not leave /x/. Most of these featured accompanying images (lost) and were set fictionally at Site 19.
Concurrently, users on a short-lived “Site 19” forum (tapatalk) would develop the fictional Site 19, and make requests for work-in-progress SCPs to be more “official sounding”.[115]http://web.archive.org/web/20190305091959/https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/site_19/erm-t2.html[116]http://web.archive.org/web/20181018022231/https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/site_19/scp-173-t1.html
September 8, 2007[117]https://archive.vn/I7QLI
This thread is #260234.
While only two posts in length, this thread demonstrates the ubiquity with which the SCP concept, and its applicability to things other than SCP-173, had spread by September 2007:
“Ok /x/ all the lights are off in my house and I have nothing better to do right now make me shit bri/x/ In return I give you creepy doll.”
> “In before that doll is given an SCP backstory.”
October 2007
This month includes threads #291170, #300509, and #318126. They are mostly request threads for SCP-173.
October 2, 2007[118]https://archive.vn/e9C2R
This thread is #291170. It marks another flurry of SCP attempts.
The modified version of SCP-173 is posted, as the original post. There is a discussion of the sculpture’s origins, and the creepypasta is referred to as “old”, with this retrospective on the past months offered by an anonymous user:
“I remember this thing from MONTHS ago, everyone wanted to make a massive catalogue of things the military found in a similar style. Great idea, but we had no organization. I think theres another 2 or 3 extra paragraphs that got written as well…”[119]https://archive.vn/e9C2R#selection-1983.9-1983.259
“Oh, man, I’d love to read that shit…
We should do it again >_>”[120]https://archive.vn/e9C2R#selection-2069.0-2069.109
Numerous variations of SCP-173 appear in this thread (all non-viable), including a SCP-109, SCP-122, a joke-style SCP-1121, SCP-98, and SCP-573.[121]https://archive.vn/e9C2R#selection-2455.0-2961.594 These iterations were short, simplistic, and focused on containment efforts, as well as their negative effects if not followed.
November — December 2007
These threads are #330786, #341529, #364297, #369788, #372973, #375370, #407504, #413162, #414485, and #418279.
They contain multiple requests for and reposts of SCP-173, both in dedicated threads and in general creepypasta threads. The original SCP-173, the modified version, and the USAF tale are posted. In several cases, the original text of SCP-173 is preferred, on one occasion due to “the more coldly neutral way it’s written”.[122]https://archive.vn/ahSUe#selection-1911.36-1911.157 In the December 4th thread, SCP-173 is referred to as the “mummy thing”. Izumi Kato is again credited numerous times.[123]https://archive.vn/ahSUe#selection-5021.0-5021.270
November 7, 2007[124]https://archive.vn/7iJdD
“This is like one of the most [requested] creepypastas of all time and there [sic] like no archive anywhere.”[125]https://archive.vn/7iJdD#selection-713.10-713.104
This thread is #330786.
It begins with a request to post SCP-173, “the creepypasta to go along with this picture… no matter how hard I’ve lurked I can’t find it.” The modified version of SCP-173 is shared. A user notes their opinion that “the creepypasta is creepier than the picture itself.”[126]https://archive.vn/7iJdD#selection-2057.0-2057.111 It is observed that the modified version is not the original and is called inferior; the original is then posted.[127]https://archive.vn/7iJdD#selection-2593.0-2765.1470 The sculpture is correctly identified as by one user’s “favorite artists”, Izumi Kato, and a link to his art gallery is shared.[128]https://archive.vn/7iJdD#selection-2851.10-2851.78[129]https://archive.vn/7iJdD#selection-3109.9-3109.71
December 28, 2007[130]https://archive.vn/ahSUe
This thread is #407504. It includes a renewed drive to write more SCPs based on images, with users challenging others to write their own.
One user writes:
“Weren’t there more of these made I remember seeing one about a crying angel statue or something, I always thought these were kind of cool, the idea of a group going around cataloging paranormal items”[131]https://archive.vn/ahSUe#selection-1739.0-1749.7
A named user (Wylv) asks for any other creepypastas of this nature, asking:
“Is there any other creepypasta like this, with a pic to go with it. It makes it a lot more creepy and almost believable.”[132]https://archive.vn/ahSUe#selection-3961.8-3961.134
To which an anonymous user replies:
“why not make some? i’m going to make one as soon as I have a worthy pic. if every /x/phile made one, we’d be sure to get at least one epic one and few good ones”[133]https://archive.vn/ahSUe#selection-4047.0-4057.7
This thread also features a philosophical analysis about the uniqueness of containment fiction, and how it is unique from its contemporary creepypastas (WARNING, INSENSITIVE LANGUAGE):
“Of course it’s fake. This picture/story combination still freaks me out more than anything else on /x/ though. Clearly, the addition of ‘nor do we wish to find out’ bit was retarded, but the specification of minimum known speed is important, because when you bother to calculate known eye blink time and the distances given, the figure is 720 kph. Accelerating to and stopping from that speed in a fraction of a second. I guess I just find the combination of a clearly solid and present physical object that doesn’t follow the laws of physics, rather obeying laws dictated by human perception. It implies that the way we understand the world to work is wrong; that rather than we being observers of a clearly defined external world, our observation is genuinely significant and intrinsic to the process. That a tree falling in a forest would not make a sound.
By denying the very basis of our knowledge, it creates a kind of insane, Lovecraftian sort of doubt about whether we actually have any power whatsoever. It creates fear of the unknown by implying that we don’t know how things work at all.”[134]https://archive.vn/ahSUe#selection-5505.0-5505.1123

Note: Threads merely reposting SCP-173 and other early SCPs are omitted from this point forward.
January 8, 2008[135]https://archive.ph/WLOYb
This /x/ thread is #427515.
Earlier in this thread, the idea of collaborative effort with others is reinforced with a user asking someone to tweak their SCP attempt if it is not good enough.[136]https://archive.ph/yvU6m#selection-153.1501-153.1586 It is notable for containing the earliest (non-viable) version of SCP-086, as well as numerous subsequent entries. These were praised for their militaristic and formal portrayal of supernatural phenomena, and were reviewed favorably in comparison with The Holders.[137]https://archive.ph/hV3fN#selection-153.5404-153.5477 An anonymous user in this thread claims to have originated the idea for putting SCPs into a “Holder-eque series”, with the deflationary idea that they should count down (as opposed to up, as in The Holders); the climax being SCP-001.[138]https://archive.ph/hV3fN#selection-153.5786-153.5912
January 17, 2008[139]https://archive.ph/mwFGh — SCP-232
This /x/ thread is #442692.
Users call for archives of the existing SCPs and a dedicated thread to act as writing prompts for flash fiction. The idea of what an SCP should and shouldn’t be was further encouraged, with in-thread critics safeguarding the entries in order to keep the unique qualities intact and the genre from being contaminated with the tropes and dependencies of other creepypastas (though these SCPs were still referred to as “pastas”). Additional commentary on SCP attempts champion the cold, clinical report style without the addition of subjective opinions in the text.[140]https://archive.ph/hV3fN#selection-153.11855-153.12080[141]https://archive.ph/hV3fN#selection-153.12830-153.12963 Attention was paid closely to what would later be termed “clinical tone“, which was in contrast to “‘lovecraft-y’ words that sound 100 years old.” At the same time, more comparisons and thematic proximity are made to H.P. Lovecraft.[142]https://archive.ph/mwFGh#selection-5329.36-5329.71
Replies in this thread such as…
“[“mirrors popping up in”] Maybe you might care to change ‘popping’ into ‘appearing.’ That sounds a little more mature and militaristic. This is a very good ‘pasta though![143]https://archive.ph/mwFGh#selection-4127.34-4127.227
… are precursors to formalized, modern day line-by-line crit and represent a strengthening sense of collaborative writing.
Numerous innovations to the SCP format first appear in this thread including the use of numerical parentheticals, redactions, warning notices to personnel, and notable embryological steps towards the containment procedures as a literary device. Most containment procedures at this time pay attention to how many personnel should participate or be present at a given time (a trait that can be traced back to SCP-173).
The January 17, 2008 thread also saw the original SCP-232 as a reply. This SCP-232 would become the first besides SCP-173 to survive to the SCP Wiki on WikiDot, where it would be significantly expanded upon, but eventually downvoted to deletion threshold over time. Due to its historical significance, the expanded SCP-232 has been preserved on-site as an -ARC.[144]https://archive.ph/HD0S2
SCP-78[145]https://archive.ph/mwFGh#selection-4471.9-4471.23
This thread’s SCP-78 (the second ever “SCP-78”, the first being in 2007[146]https://archive.is/wxQgG#selection-4148.0-4199.712) is the first to feature the idiosyncrasy of writing out a number and adding the digit in parentheses (e.g. “two (2)”).[147]https://archive.ph/hV3fN#selection-153.14449-153.14571 This, oddly, was also applied to colors as well (i.e. “yellow [yellow]”). SCP-78 was also the first to feature (at the end rather than the beginning, as seen in modern SCPs) a warning notice to in-universe personnel reading the file, which ended with “have a nice day”. This would find later maturation and frequent placement in large-scale and/or dramatic SCPs in the modern era, such as the SCP-001 hub and its proposals.[148]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-001 It is also the first apparent instance of overt redaction, worded as “clearance denied” (this again followed with “have a nice day”).
January 18, 2008[149]https://archive.ph/LZKOU[150]https://archive.ph/2RkUS
“Does this announce the return of the SCP series?
“Wait, there’s a series? Holy shit. Moar plz.”[151]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-825.10-825.58[152]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-1179.36-1179.91
Two SCP threads were created on January 18, 2008, #444231” and #444970.[153]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/history.html By the end of the first thread, the Special Containment Procedures were firmly established as foreshadowing literary devices filled with precise, prescriptive scientific measures and nomenclature. Also, containment breaches and protocolized responses to them became a topic of concern and attention for writers. The second thread debates the merits and shortcomings of cryptic composition that intentionally omits data to create a sense of mystery (“Show, Don’t Tell”).
Thread # 444231[154]https://archive.ph/LZKOU — SCP-176
The first thread began with a novel (non-viable) SCP-121. Much of the commentary in this thread pines for the original SCP-173 and marks it as a superior attempt to the spin-offs. Suggestions are again given to help fashion the series in a novel and satisfying way. Praise of the developing series compared entries favorably to The Twilight Zone, and were taken as more promising than prior creepypasta serializations.[155]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3729.30-3729.289 Criticism of the SCP attempts cast them as “cookie cutter ‘artifacts of mysterious origin'”[156]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2247.53-2247.99, and that the series was in need of more variety, such as living, organic items, including animals, or even benevolent items. Some suggested the series be less of a blunt “thing-that-kills-you” approach, and more cautionary with instructions that foreshadow dire consequences, while others suggested this method was a flaw, again pointing to the Holders:
“This runs the risk of ending up like the Holders series, where everything is predictably “follow these odd instructions or perish messily”. Part of the strength of the original is that it was a short, clear summary of an oddity, as if written for an administrator of the research facility. That’s what these should be – very weird, inexplicable objects, clearly explained, not trying to make it all bri/x/ by just hinting at terrible death.”[157]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-1817.195-1817.496
Still others disagreed with the expansion of an SCP series beyond the original SCP-173 entirely, saying that spin-offs cheapened the initial effect, and the creepypasta would suffer the same fate as the Holders as a result.[158]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3117.10-3117.780[159]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-1627.9-1627.168[160]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3547.9-3547.215
This thread saw the first moves to systematize SCP object entries with formalized numbers in order to prevent repeat numerical designations, and “maybe later categoryze [sic] them in groups, grouped in some numeric way.”[161]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2591.10-2591.167 Comparisons to Warehouse 23 are made. At least one user was collecting SCPs posted to 4chan in a Word document.[162]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-1455.14-1465.7[163]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-4357.10-4357.142
Also in this thread were a SCP-051 (non-viable, a hand-painted ceramic mask that spoke the names of the personnel who wore it),[164]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-1541.10-1541.23 a repeat posting of the aforementioned & later-ARC’d SCP-232, an original SCP-388 (non-viable, two parallel circular copper discs which phased matter that was placed between them),[165]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2161.10-2161.24 a repeat posting of the thread’s original post (stated to be “one of the better ones I’ve seen floating around here… Whoops, didn’t notice this was the OP.”),[166]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2333.98-2333.112, a repeat posting of the original SCP-173, SCP-23 (non-viable, see below),[167]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2763.10-2763.23, and SCP-176 (non-viable).[168]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3987.10-3987.25
SCP-121(Non-Viable)[169]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-519.30-519.45
The first SCP-121 used the containment procedures to generate intrigue in what the description of the item might contain. The description is notable in the context of early SCP writings for its increased fidelity to scientific language, concepts, metrics, and nomenclature. (The prose remained unrefined relative to modern clinical tone standards, with “purple” phraseology throughout.) The author later commented that they had written the SCP entry “while working” and to “excuse the [medication] typos”, indicating some professional knowledge/experience was incorporated into the entry, and lending a pseudo-scientific posture that would later be emphasized in modern SCPs.[170]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-739.53-739.109
SCP-121 would later be added to the EditThis list (“bottled ESP”) as a Euclid class, and with an accompanying picture.[171]https://archive.ph/ZXOd8#selection-745.0-747.15[172]https://web.archive.org/web/20080410223304/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-121 It would be ported to WikiDot, but eventually curated/deleted between October 2008 and January 2009.[173]http://scpclassic.wikidot.com/scp-121[174]https://web.archive.org/web/20081027163502/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com:80/scp-121[175]https://web.archive.org/web/20090109041242/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com:80/scp-121
SCP-23[176]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2763.10-2763.23
The January 18, 2008 thread’s SCP-23 is notable in several ways. It is the first to use a crude redaction (“[CLASSIFIED]”) to build intrigue, and is the first known use of a what would later be termed a “provisional site”, which is a containment cell built around an object itself at the site of discovery. The entry also included a crude addendum, a timeline of events, which was “locked” by a credentials check,[177]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2859.29-2859.77 foreshadowing “Discovery” and addenda sections in modern SCP articles. It also utilized what in modern parlance would be a disinformation campaign in its containment procedures.[178]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-2859.337-2859.520 SCP-23 continued and refined the scientific/administrative wording & posture towards the documentation, and is one of the only early SCP attempts whose clinical tone is arguably on par with later, Series 1 standards. This article received some praise with one commenter stating “I guess the point was that there is no reliable description available. Kinda Lovecraftian, but not bad overall”.[179]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-3031.136-3041.7
SCP-23 would later occupy the SCP-023 slot on EditThis.
SCP-010/SCP-616 (Non-Viable)[180]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-4789.10-4789.80
A subsequent post, labeled both “SCP-010” and “SCP-616” (non-viable on both counts), built off of the innovations of prior SCP attempts, and included foreshadowing containment procedures with highly-specific notes that would serve as potential hooks, “Level 3 Security Clearance”, and a reference to supplemental documentation. This entry is notable in the following comment exchange, which marks the first apparent instance of crude collaboration on a single SCP entry:[181]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-4961.0-5047.108
are you gonna finish or what? you don’t mention additional documents without writing them.
Maybe, but I think it looks good as it is. If you’d like I can write them.
An “Additional Procedures” addendum post follows.[182]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-5133.42-5133.71 This post is notable as the first documented containment breach, and is formatted in a prototype incident report. It concludes with recommendations to reinforce containment and reduce the likelihood of repeat breaches. This “incident report” is written from a first-person perspective, which would later be discouraged in favor of third-person, but would eventually come back into style as modern SCP authors desired to inject more subjectivity and traditional prose element back into the genre.
This entry would be added to EditThis in January 2008 as SCP-010.[183]https://web.archive.org/web/20080410103026/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-010[184]https://web.archive.org/web/20080617060229/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-010
SCP-091 (Non-Viable)[185]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-5305.9-5305.24
The initial SCP-091 was a tree-like object, possibly of a feminine figure, whose effects were specific to human males. It featured scientifically robust containment procedures and terms that typified early WikiDot entries’ penchant for specificity and academic/procedural believability. These are the first containment procedures to specifically mention monitoring for “any breach of containment”, and also what to do in the event of a breach.[186]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-5305.1275-5305.1427
Thread #444970[187]https://archive.ph/2RkUS
This thread opens where the prior one ended; with the posting and discussion of the initial SCP-091. The majority of this relatively shorter thread is commentary on SCP-091 and the larger implications of a compositional philosophy that would become central to the containment fiction genre in later waves; “Show, Don’t Tell”.
SCP-091 (Non-Viable)(Discussion)
There is no description for this entry, but comments reveal a picture was initially included.[188]https://archive.ph/2RkUS#selection-463.30-463.78 The subtlety of this entry (e.g. what happens when someone touches the tree) is divisive, with some insisting clarification, while others enjoy and advocate for the open-endedness.[189]https://archive.ph/2RkUS#selection-549.10-549.199[190]https://archive.ph/2RkUS#selection-979.30-979.192
Humans have an innate fear of the unknown, furthermore- hey! The entirety of /x/ is proof of this- and by EXPLICITLY STATING what something does, by god that just doesn’t effectively prey on innate fear. There’s only so much one person’s imagination can do, while leaving certain aspects up to the reader/viewer always provokes more lasting horror and fear.[191]https://archive.ph/2RkUS#selection-1581.794-1581.1151
The author appears numerous times to respond to comments, thanking individuals for their critique.
January 19, 2008[192]https://archive.ph/aHUf5[193]https://archive.ph/jmVa6[194]https://archive.ph/rHdvx
Four additional threads on 4chan were created on January 19, 2008. This was also the date that the EditThis Wiki for the SCP series was created / shared.[195]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-4167.36-4167.168[196]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-987.9-987.71 An un-elaborated-upon thread, #445437, briefly mentions SCP, and includes this comment:
“The SCP item was a one off, some guy wrote it and used the picture of the sculpture. Its not the holders.”[197]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/445437.xml
Thread #446184[198]https://archive.ph/aHUf5— SCP-519
This thread contains only an initial (non-viable) SCP-519 and its neutral to negative reaction commentary. There is philosophical push-back regarding the direction that the writing was progressing into, with one anonymous user discouraging the role of immersion within the prose by arguing, “This is creepypasta, not an RPing thread.”[199]https://archive.ph/aHUf5#selection-801.30-801.71
Thread # 446341[200]https://archive.ph/jmVa6 — SCP-529, SCP-314, SCP-017
“Thanks, writing up some more later and cleaning up the language a bit, also. … This style inspired me to write again and stop lurking and start posting. Could it reach the stultifying boredom of Holders? Perhaps. To the ones keeping this style afloat, kudos.”[201]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-5979.36-5979.368
This thread contains the first known mention of the EditThis Wiki.
Numerous early SCPs are praised and requested (SCP-176, SCP-338, SCP-232, SCP-051, SCP-091), with some noting that they have been transferred to and collected on a new EditThis Wiki as a repository. Readers are encouraged to write new SCPs, and many new entries are submitted. These continue to incorporate developing mainstay components, such as use of clearance levels,[202]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-7355.471-7355.488, immersive elements (e.g. terminal commands),[203]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-8053.9-8053.109, and emphasis on technical language/jargon,[204]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-10241.37-10241.117[205]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-10069.445-10069.483[206]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-10069.1067-10069.1117 cross-testing,[207]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-10241.130-10241.188 use of secondary documentation/addenda,[208]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-9209.426-9209.433, narrative developments as opposed to static description,[209]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-9209.426-9209.433 a turn away from strictly horror elements,[210]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-8225.10-8225.23[211]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-9295.10-9295.24 the development of numerous later-to-be tropes/compositional infractions,[212]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-9983.139-9983.227[213]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-10069.219-10069.228[214]https://archive.ph/0FGUt#selection-1375.0-1379.202 and more common references to containment breaches.[215]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-5161.10-5161.25 This thread features what would become — in addition to SCP-173 and the now-ARC’d SCP-232— the third surviving SCP attempt from 4chan, SCP-529 “Josie”. It also contains SCP-017, and the initial (non-viable) SCP-314.
Discussion clarifies if the anomalies should be referred to as “Items” or “Subjects”.[216]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-3207.0-3329.91 Complaints are also present which consider the original creepypasta (SCP-173) as sufficiently ruined with the addition of variations.[217]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-5789.10-5893.105 Criticism again points allegorically towards The Holders as a warning:[218]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-6495.30-6495.1241
“creepypasta only works so long as it maintains an element of seriousness that makes it believable.
S’where the holders series went downhill, first one was creepy as hell as it was -possible-, as the series went on, you could start to tell the change in writers, and people started changing the conditions — the numbers changed with almost every item, traps from old items were reused, a few of them broke consistency (the holder of the word or whatever — everyone was randomly speaking in latin, whereas the rest were just incoherent screams and visions of horror) or tried to make themselves important.
when you start ruining the consistency of them (which you guys haven’t done yet), changing up the conditions (which also, have not done yet), or just start randomly breaking logic [219]which you guys are doing with the afforementioned [sic] armed guards, it causes the serious feel to fade, and the awesomeness of the creepypasta just fades.”
Philosophical questions are touched upon which would later be answered definitively in-universe in the character of the Foundation, and would differentiate them from contrasting GoIs.[220]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-6581.267-6581.347[221]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-6667.30-6667.116 One participant in this discussion would foreshadow “We die in the dark, so you can live in the light”, a common shibboleth of the SCP Wiki site and in-universe culture:[222]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/about-the-scp-foundation[223]https://www.reddit.com/r/SCP/comments/7nm4n1/we_die_in_the_dark_so_that_you_may_live_in_the/[224]https://www.reddit.com/r/SCP/comments/e29pyp/remember_us_we_die_in_the_darkness_so_you_can/[225]https://www.reddit.com/r/DankMemesFromSite19/comments/u3x9jp/we_die_in_the_dark_so_you_may_live_in_the_light/[226]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/we-die-in-the-dark[227]https://www.google.com/search?q=scp+we+die+in+the+dark
“The reason they aren’t destroyed is that these objects do things that are apparently impossible, and the government wants that power. That’s the whole premise behind the SCP series: a shadowy government agency built on the idea that the cost in human life of containing these things and the risk to national security to keeping them keeping them around instead of destroying them is an acceptable price for the chance, one day, of being able to make use of them. It’s one of the things that makes the SCP series so creepy, the objects themselves aren’t just pools of shadow in our bright world, the fact of them being kept and studied at such a cost suggests that the world in general is a much darker place than we imagine.”[228]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-6753.36-6753.760
“Good point re exploding the things, but you could argue that this is a research facility – they want to know HOW these things do what they do, just cos they’re curious.”[229]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-6839.36-6839.204
“these objects are being stored/supressed/contained because they are too valuable(scientifically or millitarily [sic] speaking) to destroy, but are not curently [sic] understood well enough to make use of them. imagine if you could have a small army of SCP-173 that you could control. the sheer level of destruction the SCP items could wreak if weaponized makes them worth protecting.”[230]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-6925.91-6925.472
These discussions would prefigure the logic and motivations for the fictional SCP Foundation, and form the basis of their core tenants and actions: to secure, contain, protect, and research.[231]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/how-to-write-an-scp, see first sentences of “Containment” tab.
SCP-113 (Non-Viable)[232]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-7355.10-7355.24
A SCP-113 posted is quickly identified as a clinically-disguised pop culture reference to “portable holes from old bugs bunny cartoons”. Incorporating pop culture without sufficient deviation or derivation would later be discouraged to the point of curation.[233]https://archive.ph/0FGUt#selection-1375.0-1379.202
SCP-497 (Non-Viable)[234]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-9983.30-9983.44
Following the lead of SCP-529, the initial SCP-497 was the first SCP to introduce the later-common trope of the anomaly being allowed to walk freely around the containment facility, due to its docility and harmlessness. It also incorporates elements of humor that would later find development in the “-J” designation and lolFoundation:
“Subject is believed to be a photon-based life-form and thus in his natural state completely intangible. Energy weapon 47-A is required to hinder him in any way but so far it’s proven unessecary as his crippling need to be the center of attention has been all that was required to keep him on base. If personel can deal with his anal-attentiveness, cowardice, mysogyny, and severly inflated ego coupled with deep self-loathing they will find an incredible store of information. Special Notes: We have no idea what “Smeghead” means but apperently it’s an insult of high caliber.” [typographical errors original][235]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-9983.472-9983.955
SCP-017 (“Shadow Person”)[236]https://archive.vn/jmVa6#selection-8397.10-8397.25
SCP-017 was written by Sam Swicegood, aka “Reixis/CityToast” on WikiDot.[237]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-85262/scp-017#post-4561972 It was first posted to this thread, in a crude, interrupted form.[238]https://archive.vn/jmVa6#selection-8607.0-8607.56 It was transferred to the EditThis the next day (January 20) by an anonymous user, given the name “Shadow Person”, and then was ported to WikiDot on July 25, 2008 by Kain Pathos Crow.[239]http://web.archive.org/web/20080410103032/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-017[240]http://web.archive.org/web/20080420081909/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/?title=SCP-017&action=history[241]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-017, rev.0 It has gone through numerous revisions to reach its current form.
SCP-017 was shared in its own dedicated thread later in February 2008, where it was praised.[242]https://archive.vn/Z3LXx
Thread # 446360[243]https://archive.ph/rHdvx
This thread begins with a reposting of SCP-173. Additional links to the newly-created EditThis repository are shared. SCP-008 is posted, which is the fourth SCP that survived transfer to the EditThis, to WikiDot, and withstood the Mass Edit.[244]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-008 Previously-written early SCP efforts are reposted and several new ones are submitted. The first mentions of canonicty and definitions arise in an attempt to keep the entries internally consistent.[245]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-4253.9-4253.55[246]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-4633.36-4633.339[247]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-5865.9-5865.200
Collaborative possibilities are realized as the EditThis Wiki comes more into focus. For example, in a post, instructions are given to “just add [SCPs] to the [EditThis] wiki and somebody will clean it up for you.”[248]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-6295.81-6295.143
The thread sees heated criticism of SCP attempts. Users reiterate the uniqueness of the format, compared to other creepypastas.[249]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-2155.0-2155.500
SCP-008 (Non-Viable)[250]https://archive.ph/rHdvx#selection-1629.10-1629.24
SCP-008 — an alien prion that causes flu-like symptoms, death, and reanimation — is first posted in this thread. It has undergone numerous changes to fit the version presently seen on the SCP Wiki including a cautionary warning, an object class, the document contained in a collapsible, a Creative-Commons-compliant image, and an addendum with a cross-test to SCP-500.[251]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-008 It is titled “Zombie Plague” on both EditThis and WikiDot.[252]https://web.archive.org/web/20080903043644/http://www.editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Continue_on[253]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-series The EditThis version’s object class was Keter, while the current WikiDot version is Euclid.[254]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-008
January 20, 2008 (/b/)[255]https://archive.ph/bu1YC — SCPs 002, 003, 256
Three threads were created on this date, #51414749, #447559, and #448755. Thread #447559 contains a lone “SCP-9000+”, a joke effort that casts the “It’s Over 9000” meme into the format, along with references to the “Don’t Tase Me Bro” meme, and the hacker group Anonymous.
Thread #448755 [256]https://archive.ph/QNbYp — SCP Explosion, Standards, Story Telling, On Cross-Linking, Lowfyr, Eberstrom, Admin
Note: See an expanded article on this thread here.
Thread #448755 was created when a prior SCP-related thread (possibly #446360) was pruned. It begins with a link to the EditThis Wiki. It is a significant thread in the history of the development of the SCP format and style. Thread #448755 contains the first appearance of notable SCPs, including SCP-002, SCP-003, SCP-256, and others. In addition, it contains numerous crude, undeveloped versions of later-common addenda types, including a journal-like entry,[257]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-21957.395-22301.1004 audio transcription log,[258]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-12081.765-12081.1273 the first explicit clearance lock rejecting access to data,[259]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-13037.1785-13037.1842 and the first set of testing logs.[260]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17257.0-17267.7 The thread also contains the first known use of the popular phrase: “Does the Black Moon Howl?“, part of SCP-256,[261]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-6509.134-6509.159 and the first known conversation to suggest the standardization of the metric system, of proofreading, and of curation.[262]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-17854.0-17923.214[263]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-11129.0-11129.184[264]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-2091.0-2091.83
Thread #51414749 [265]https://archive.ph/bu1YC
This thread was posted on /b/ during the rapid series of SCP threads on /x/, a thread reposting SCP-173 (and later, the initial SCP-121). A link to the newly-created EditThis Wiki is shared:

January 21, 2008[267]https://archive.vn/C45PT
This thread is #450822.
After some preliminary discussion about a mirror with science fiction properties, a user states it would be a good SCP, and posts their “first serious crack at one of these”, which is the first SCP-077.[268]https://archive.vn/C45PT#selection-2329.104-2329.118 The remainder of the thread is heated discussion about the SCP’s internal logic and implications, with a focus on the science of mirrors and light.
This SCP-077 was saved to the EditThis with the title “black sphere”, as well as to the WikIDot.[269]http://web.archive.org/web/20080410222758/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-077[270]https://web.archive.org/web/20080810062627/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-077 It was deleted as part of the Mass Edit.[271]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-181287/the-mass-edit-workbench-scp-0-99
January 23, 2008[272]https://archive.vn/1jSvG
“scp sucked at first, but its quickly getting much better than holders.”[273]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-4779.10-4779.80
This thread is #453291. It contains the most original SCP attempts in a single thread other than Thread #448755, and the first suggestion to separate “Joke” SCPs and give them a “j” designation, “so that they don’t use up valuable numbers.”[274]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2699.0-2699.258[275]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-3261.0-3261.112[276]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-3690.0-3701.171[277]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2934.0-3003.78 One user writes:
“SCP-133 – ACME Instant Holes SCP-743 – Paranormally addictive Jerky and SCP-972 – The Sphere should all really be placed into the joke section. They aren’t cute and odd like the winged horse and Josie, they’re just stupid.”
The first fully-documented SCP-001 proposal is posted in this thread, as well as the first unofficial neutralized anomaly, (non-designated) alongside the first use of “Previous Special Containment Procedures”.[278]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9737.10-9737.193[279]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9909.316-9909.457[280]https://old.reddit.com/r/SCP/comments/dgyl9v/the_second_ever_scp001_proposal_and_the_history/, archive
The original post suggests creating more SCP entries, which is met with enthusiasm. Some already-written SCPs are reposted, but a majority in this thread are new compositions, with over 20 new entries (all non-viable): SCP-019, SCP-066, SCP-014, SCP-831, a duplicate (different) SCP-003, SCP-027, SCP-901, SCP-592, SCP-319, SCP-983, SCP-887, SCP-463, SCP-691, SCP-133, SCP-471, SCP-036, SCP-754, SCP-946, SCP-222, SCP-233, the first extant SCP-001 proposal, a SCP-9001, and arguably the first format screw in SCP-134 (or “431-PCS“). SCP-294 (“The Coffee Machine”) is also discussed.[281]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10167.0-10167.269 (SCP-294 would be posted in full and shared on a new /x/ thread the next day, see “January 24, 2008”, below.)
Standards and expectations of composition were developed, such as in the following quote from an anon:[282]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/453291.xml
“The part I don’t like about a lot of these newer ones is that nobody gives any reason WHY the particular procedures are necessary.”
SCPs here addressed containment breaches more frequently and with more detail than in prior threads.[283]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-1335.668-1335.801[284]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2033.432-2033.979[285]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-4607.466-4607.504[286]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-8409.898-8409.1004[287]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9383.904-9383.1027 Users would continue crit in hopes of refining the efforts and keeping the series afloat, including the first explicit refutation of the common “seems to be” vs “is” error.[288]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-7539.0-7539.174[289]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-8953.0-8953.238
In this thread, writing in the developing SCP format would be popular enough and given enough exposure for a user to refer to SCP as “a creative writing project”, giving the first meta-definition of the effort.[290]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-4167.0-4253.507 The same is true of “Keter”, which is asked about specifically.[291]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-6079.0-6079.115[292]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-6337.0-6441.196
Users can be seen giving tutorials on how to add new entries to the EditThis.[293]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9211.0-9297.219 Discussion occurs on potentially neutralized anomalies in the format, and the first semblance of collaborative brainstorming for SCP ideas occurs.[294]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9995.0-10081.144[295]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10253.0-10511.64 The first-person interview/journal entry as an addendum is further developed.[296]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-11381.0-11381.1035
The thread ends discussing whether the SCP series has become the new Holders.[297]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-13343.0-14067.57
A comment in this thread would go on to become “SCP-Numberless (entropy reverser)” on the EditThis.[298]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-12841.0-12841.255[299]http://web.archive.org/web/20080409210737/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[300]http://web.archive.org/web/20080410225109/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-Numberless
SCP-001
This thread is the first to see the first documented proposal for the SCP-001 slot.[301]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10855.10-10855.158 It is possible a prior SCP-001 entry existed, as one was posted to the EditThis slot two days prior on January 21, 2008; this was criticized and deleted from the EditThis, the only lasting information about it being that it was subpar to standards then for the 001 designation. Whether these two are the same proposal is unknown.[302]http://web.archive.org/web/20080518135653/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/?title=Talk:SCP-001&action=history[303]http://web.archive.org/web/20080517151235/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-001
It is clear from context that even at this early point in the history of SCP, the 001 slot was seen as set-apart:
“I came up with this. If you don’t think it’s worthy of being 001, feel free to change the designation to 004, or eight hundred billion, or whatever.”
The proposal was listed as a Keter class object and was a nondescript object made of an unknown kind of stone. The entry was crude by modern standards, including measurements to the thousandths decimal place, intense radiation, and termination procedures for no less than three-hierarchical degrees of personnel (the third degree of personnel ultimately terminated by an O5 member).
January 24, 2008[304]https://archive.vn/6HuM6
Two threads of note are created this date: #454823 and #455858.
The first is a thread is started by Eberstrom, and reposts a “New-ish one from the wiki”, SCP-294 (“The Coffee Machine”), which is praised. The author, identified as “Arc” on EditThis,[305]http://web.archive.org/web/20080521072851/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/User:Arc appears and comments:
“Hey, it’s the one I wrote last night. It was two in the morning and while it sounded good at the time, I think the “cup of Joe” thing is pretty much concentrated fail. Anyone else who thinks so is free to strike it from the record”[306]https://archive.vn/6HuM6#selection-451.0-451.264
This short thread ends with a failed proposal to designate all SCPs that aren’t dangerous as “SCP-####”.[307]https://archive.vn/6HuM6#selection-1397.420-1397.480
Lofwyr created the second thread (#455858), promoting the EditThis wiki.
Beyond January 2008
Note: This section will feature notable developments, as opposed to thread walkthroughs, due to the increasing sparsity and relative lack of engagement with SCP in /x/ threads.
Does this need to be stickied or something? It comes up like every day.”[308]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/682057.html — Anonymous User, 2008
The remainder of /x/ threads in January 2008 and the following months are mostly mentions of SCP in passing, reposts of SCP-173 as part of larger creepypasta request threads,[309]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/486030.html failed revival attempts, joke takes, or brief, new SCPs with relatively little engagement.[310]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/459974.html, http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/458984.html, http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/460645.html, … Continue reading Links to the EditThis are shared as SCP is mentioned, encouraging participation there.[311]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/460577.html, http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/563451.html, http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/563740.html
At times, the SCP series is referred to in the past, suggesting that most /x/ users had moved on and believed that the series was definitively over.[312]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/461778.html Some requested for new SCPs to be written.[313]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/627338.html Occasionally, the series is asked about and discussed in more detail,[314]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/498832.html, http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/572115.html however very few SCPs are posted to /x/ in February and March 2008, as new activity would primarily occur on EditThis. For example, a thread on March 29th, 2008 featured a competent SCP entry, an early version of SCP-125, which was never added to the EditThis series list, possibly indicating that /x/ was no longer being observed as diligently for potential new SCPs by that time.[315]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/563451.xml[316]http://web.archive.org/web/20080614163913/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[317]http://web.archive.org/web/2/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-125[318]http://scpclassic.wikidot.com/editthis-scps, see “SCP-125” A competent SCP-1045 was posted to /x/ on May 10, 2008 and was never added to the EditThis or WikiDot.[319]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/636950.html
The milieu of /x/ at this time would change dramatically once Dr Gears (then “Cog”) posted several of his SCPs to multiple /x/ threads, which inspired a number of other entries to be submitted as well.[320]https://archive.vn/dIUWj[321]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/580352.html (For more information, see Thread #582988, below, and the dedicated article on Thread #573348.)
During the Summer months of 2008, new SCPs would be advertised after they were posted to the EditThis on /x/.[322]https://archive.ph/b8867 /x/ posts featured sentiment that begrudged the SCP Series, with some annoyed that the series was mentioned on /x/ almost daily.[323]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/701468.html
SCP-016 (“Sentient Micro-organism”)
The initial SCP-016 was posted to /x/ in a dedicated thread (#460645) on January 27, 2008.[324]https://archive.vn/lYLZi It was a form of bacteria that displayed characteristics of a neural network when brought together.
The history of the entry is incomplete. Oddly, it was not present on the first archive capture of the SCP Series on EditThis, with other entries attempting to occupy the designation, such as the proto-“joke” article “/b/tard”,[325]http://web.archive.org/web/20080409210737/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[326]WARNING: RACIST AND MYSOGINISTIC LANGUAGE http://web.archive.org/web/20080412180734/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-016 but was added by a later date (possibly on April 6), under the name “Sentient Micro-organism”.[327]http://web.archive.org/web/20080614163913/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series Despite this, a comment responding to SCP-016 on the January 2008 thread indicates that it was possibly on the EditThis prior to /x/.[328]https://archive.vn/lYLZi#selection-341.10-341.69 Edit history of the EditThis page suggested the entry was not very well received, even in later forms.[329]http://web.archive.org/web/20080715200939/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/?title=SCP-016&action=history
A modified version was ported to WikiDot,[330]http://scpclassic.wikidot.com/pre-massedit-scps, though the name was retained (and is virtually the only component retained today). It was again received unfavorably, deleted, and rewritten numerous times, definitively so by DrClef in 2009.[331]https://web.archive.org/web/20081027163426/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-016[332]https://web.archive.org/web/20090108235407/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com:80/scp-016[333]https://web.archive.org/web/20090315005533/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com:80/scp-016[334]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122535/scp-016 Discussion of a more appropriate object class has been a perennial issue for the rewrite.[335]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122535/scp-016#post-2250367[336]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122535/scp-016#post-2797705[337]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122535/scp-016#post-3560961[338]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-016, rev. 17-20
SCP-861 (“Fallen Angel”)
“Not OP, but I just whipped this one up. Whaddaya think, Anon?”
SCP-861 (“Fallen Angel”) is an early SCP first posted to /x/ on February 3, 2008 on thread #472986, and that has survived to the present day on WikiDot under its original slot.[339]https://archive.vn/pD2BP#selection-1559.0-1585.24[340]http://web.archive.org/web/20080409210737/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[341]http://web.archive.org/web/20080412092231/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-861[342]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-series#800[343]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-861 It was added to the EditThis two days later by an anonymous user, and given the title “A Fallen Angel”.[344]http://web.archive.org/web/20080604184742/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/?title=SCP-861&action=history It went through relatively few, minor changes and edits (e.g. de-all-capitalization, word choices, etc) an was then transferred to the WikiDot on July 26, 2008 by user far2.[345]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-861, rev.0 SCP-861 is pseudo-angelic figure that fell to Earth. SCP-861 loosely conforms with biblical descriptions of angels, featuring multiple eyes, feathered wings, and use of the numerology.[346]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-78191/scp-861#post-1461178 It’s author is identified in archives, but is anonymous.
SCP-861 is the oldest-surviving article to feature the “XK end of the world event/scenario” lore, and thus is likely the most influential in propelling the terminology into its common use today.[347]https://archive.vn/pD2BP#selection-1793.0-1793.939 The use is noted on the /x/ thread, the EditThis talk page (“What is xk?”) and the WikiDot comment section.[348]https://archive.vn/pD2BP#selection-2295.10-2295.282[349]http://web.archive.org/web/20080604185949/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-861[350]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-78191/scp-861#post-501602 A follow-up comment on the /x/ thread shows the author referencing a pre-existing SCP on EditThis, the initial SCP-640, as having originated the term.[351]https://archive.vn/pD2BP#selection-2381.180-2381.294 This version of SCP-640 was ported to WikIDot, but was pruned shortly thereafter, and was replaced by the current SCP-640 in July 2009.[352]https://web.archive.org/web/20080817055320/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-640[353]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-640
SCP-861 was praised in its time.[354]https://archive.vn/pD2BP#selection-1915.0-1915.231 The talk page on EditThis features Eberstrom writing “So much win.”[355]http://web.archive.org/web/20080604185949/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-861
SCP-004 (“The 12 Rusty Keys and the Door”)
“I doubt this will get accepted as SCP-001, but I wanted to try my hand at it. Tell me what you all think.”
SCP-004 began as a SCP-001 “story”, and was first posted to /x/ thread #500912 on February 20, 2008.[356]https://archive.vn/SHysQ#selection-249.0-279.153 It was written by user desuprogrammer, and was ported to the WikiDot on July 25, 2008 by WikiDot user Dr_Schubert.[357]https://web.archive.org/web/20080617060104/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-004[358]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-004[359]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-1827114[360]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-004, rev.0[361]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-227172 Its image was changed in 2019 to comply with the site’s Creative Commons license.[362]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-4400223
Initially, SCP-004 lacked any dedicated containment procedures (these were later added but in the document came well after the description), featured heavy second-person prose, and made an allusion to Cthulu (“… some sort of anthropomorphic squid with wings”) and X-Box.[363]https://archive.vn/SHysQ#selection-463.1452-463.1498[364]https://archive.vn/SHysQ#selection-549.750-549.944[365]https://web.archive.org/web/20080617060104/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-004[366]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/562997.html

It was posted on the same day to the EditThis Wiki, in the SCP-004 slot.[370]https://archive.vn/SHysQ#selection-979.0-1151.33[371]http://web.archive.org/web/20080619120734/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/?title=SCP-004&action=history The discussion page from EditThis is archived,[372]https://web.archive.org/web/20080617060104/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-004 where multiple users are seen directing the prose away from traditional creepypasta modes of writing, and refining the expectations and presentation of the SCP format:
“The problem with this is that it reads far too dramatically. These are not supposed to read like ghost stories, but like clipped, truncated summaries for officials to read. Leaving out details is often more effective than leading them in. As soon as I’m done with my latest SCP, I’ll post a revision of this on my talk page. And don’t refer to Joke SCP’s in ones concerned with Serious Business. —Eberstrom 22:03, 21 February 2008 (EST)”
You’re way too liberal with the “terminations”, to the point where I’m wondering if you use them just so you don’t have to describe a lengthier and more logical procedure. At the very least, use “silenced” to tell what happened to the teenagers. Remember, whatever orgenization this is obviously dosent automatically consider itself above the law and public, only when termination and drastic measures are genuinely for the good of mankind. Chojiro
It’s a pretty good ghost story, but that’s not what these are about. If no one objects, I’m going to reformat this later in the week, losing the unimportant details. Maybe we should move the original somewhere? Aiden 06:00, 23 March 2008 (EST)
It was rewritten numerous times; by numerous contributors, and notably by WikiDot user and SCP author Photosynthetic in 2010,[373]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-715005 and by the SCP Wiki Rewrite Team in 2015.[374]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-004, rev. 49 In 2013, author desuprogrammer came back to provide the following commentary:
“Although I really have no way to prove that I am the original author, I just wanted to say how happy I am that it is so well received. I wrote this in my sophomore year in college, which I think was around 2007 or 2008. In /x/ on 4chan, I got my first bit of praise from someone, telling me it was their favorite SCP of all time. I was very happy. I am not a writer by trade or even really hobby. I am a software developer. So it kind of makes me want to write more. So thank you for that =D.”[375]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-1827114
“When I first wrote this, I was on an HP Lovecraft kick, so the giant green monster was originally Cthulhu. It would probably serve the SCP better if we removed it, or perhaps expand on it a bit and make it more interesting. Also, originally, my idea was that the effects of the door weren’t apparent until crossing the threshold of the door. In fact once you pass even partially through the door frame and you are using one of the unsafe keys, you were sucked in and torn asunder in a variety of ways. Otherwise, I would find it interesting to explore the effects of the objects passed into the unsafe room on this plane of existence. Of course as some of them are passages to other universes completely separate and different from our own, they may never show effects on our world/timeline. Figuring out which doors have an effect on ours would be interesting though. Another thing I wondered after writing this…why doesn’t SCP use inanimate objects to test with, before using death row inmates? I guess a condemned criminal is a cheaper sacrifice than a baseball.”[376]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-2231178
“This was one of the original SCP’s before amnesiacs. We were a little trigger happy back then.”[377]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-2697213
“Yep, I originally posted this on /x/ on 4chan. I wrote this shortly after reading SCP-173 for the first time. At the time those silly “Holder” creepy pastas were all the rage, and most SCP’s at the time had the agency killing everyone that knew too much. The original version also had the other half of “Josie the Half Cat” existing in the pocket dimension where Site 62 resides. So I say, if you guys have a good idea for updating the story to modern standards by removing all the needless terminations, go for it. Killing witnesses isn’t what SCP-004 or any SCP is about anyways.”[378]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-2671182
“I honestly am afraid to touch it. I feel like I would just mess it up if I attempted to revise it, as I have attempted to write two more SCP’s and they were rejected immediately =P. I give my full blessing to anyone who wants to try to modernize it. If you wouldn’t mind though, just run what you are thinking by me, and chances are I would approve it. You are all much better writers than I am, I believe anything you guys could do would only make it better =). And hey…maybe we could chat and you could help me fix one of my recent SCP’s to see if we can make it something worth putting up on the wiki again?”[379]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-2671177

Thread #573348[381]https://archive.vn/dIUWj — The Emergence of Cog/Dr Gears
Note: A detailed history of this thread can be found on the dedicated Thread #573348 article.
This thread was posted on April 3, 2008. It contains numerous notable, viable SCPs, most of which were written & posted by Dr Gears. In addition to Dr Gears’ SCP-882, SCP-682, SCP-015, and others, it also contains the first known versions of SCP-012, SCP-500, SCP-079, SCP-300, and SCP-093.
Thread #573348 contains the first mention of what would become the standard format for containment fiction writing contests (though the idea likely developed independently of this first mention).[382]https://archive.vn/dIUWj#selection-14148.0-14217.287 As a result, SCP-001 lore was further developed,[383]https://archive.vn/dIUWj#selection-14606.0-14681.7 and additional SCP-001 proposals were submitted.[384]https://archive.vn/dIUWj#selection-15900.0-15969.37[385]https://archive.vn/dIUWj#selection-18885.0-18885.64[386]https://archive.vn/dIUWj#selection-17781.10-17781.20[387]http://web.archive.org/web/20080513035559/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-016[388]http://web.archive.org/web/20080519002824/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[389]https://archive.vn/dIUWj#selection-15176.0-15245.74
Thread #582988[390]https://archive.ph/WXELA
This is another thread that Dr Gears (as “Cog”) began, one week after thread #573348, which had been deleted after almost one day of being on /x/.[391]((http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/580352.html)) The EditThis is shared, and Dr Gears posts more original SCP works, including SCP-216 (“Water Absorber”, non-viable as of 2011[392]https://web.archive.org/web/20100818111325/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-216) and SCP-409 (“Contagious Crystal”). Dr Gears also defends SCP from critics as having more potential than The Holders, and encourages others to write as well.[393]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-11628.1-11699.1036[394]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-11809.0-11889.217 SCP-530 and SCP-127 are also first posted here.[395]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-6246.1-6317.1345
By April 2008, a template of the SCP format posted to /x/ included the classic object classes,[396]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-2892.1-2945.207 though they were not well-defined, and later commentary on surviving articles from this time note how the object classes do not suit the object.[397]e.g. https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-96203/scp-409, https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-82656/scp-012 Users, particularly Dr Gears, emphasize the use of supplemental material to help tell “stories seeds” in the format.[398]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-7948.1-8029.7 Numerous users, including Dr Gears, call for a means of curation for bad entries.[399]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-8138.1-8201.7[400]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-9617.0-9617.559[401]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-10324.1-10395.1003
The thread also includes the initial, non-viable SCP-541, SCP-479, SCP-452, SCP-401, SCP-946, SCP-066, SCP-099, SCP-418, SCP-240,
SCP-530 – “Carl”
SCP-530 is a polymorphic dog that is free to roam the site due to its friendliness. It was first posted to thread #582988, on April 11, 2008 by an anonymous user.[402]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-6246.1-6317.1345 It was added to EditThis the next day, and given the extended title “Carl the Variable Dog”.[403]http://web.archive.org/web/20080413113659/http://www.editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[404]http://web.archive.org/web/20080430061537/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/?title=SCP-530&action=history It’s original picture was a dog with supernumerary limbs.[405]http://web.archive.org/web/20080420140134/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-530 An addendum about a foul smell after feeding the object deli meat was added prior to being transferred to WikiDot on July 26, 2008 by far2.[406]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-530, rev.0 Its image was removed in 2020 for not being CC compliant.[407]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-530, rev.23 The article is both loved and criticized for the “fart joke”, and is referred to as lolFoundation multiple times.[408]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122809/scp-530[409]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122809/scp-530#post-3588938
SCP-530, being one number above SCP-529, is a counterpart to/spin-off take of “Josie the Half Cat”.[410]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-122809/scp-530#post-1808744
SCP-127 – “The Living Gun”
SCP-127 is a submachine gun that fires biological matter and features organic responses and behaviors. For more information, visit the dedicated article on the author.
Thread #584381[411]https://archive.ph/8j4bA
Started on April 11, 2008, this thread begins asking about in-universe lore; about the pay of SCP agents. Dr Gears (as Cog) is involved in the discussion, which attempts to detail canonical lore on the question. There is discussion, primarily led by Gears, to establish a stand-alone website from EditThis/4chan and to have it be fidelitous in presentation to support/maintain the suspension of disbelief regarding the SCP series and its organization. A user suggests an approval procedure for new SCPs in order to maintain quality.[412]https://archive.ph/8j4bA#selection-2622.0-2673.439
SCP-224 – “Grandfather Clock”
SCP-224 is a grandfather clock that manifests anomalous temporal qualities. It was first posted to /x/ thread #592883 (a dedicated thread) on April 16, 2008.[413]https://archive.ph/AiY7S Its author is anonymous. SCP-224’s initial numerical designation was 255, however this slot was occupied on the EditThis at this time (“Bladed Weapon”, non-viable), so it was changed to the SCP-224 slot.[414]http://web.archive.org/web/20080417032109/http://editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP_Series[415]http://web.archive.org/web/20080521045018/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-224 An object class of “Euclid” was added while on EditThis.[416]http://web.archive.org/web/20080621045352/http://www.editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/SCP-224
SCP-224 was ported to WikiDot on July 26, 2008 by user far2. Shortly after, SCP-224 was considered for ARC-ing instead of outright deletion, due to its role in Fishmonger’s Wanderlust series.[417]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-701708 It was eventually rewritten by user TroyL in 2010 and again in 2012.[418]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-224, rev.0[419]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-728815[420]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-1674489 It’s original image was removed in 2020 due to not being CC-compliant.[421]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-4500038
SCP-619 – “Lucky Jeans”
“One thing I like about this item when i wrote it originally was the idea that almost all of … [us] has put on an old pair of pants and found cash in the pockets.”[422]https://archive.ph/5BJcJ
The original SCP-619 was posted to /x/ on 4/20/2008 by 4chan user MachineThreat, also known as Dr David VanScoy on Wikidot.[423]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/599881.xml, archive[424]https://web.archive.org/web/20130403135214mp_/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-89515/scp-619[425]https://archive.ph/5BJcJ There are no records of it added to the EditThis. It was also absent from the SCP Wiki on WikiDot until September 2008 (between September 12th and 24th, likely on the 16th).[426]https://web.archive.org/web/20080924221537/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com:80/scp-series[427]https://archive.ph/5BJcJ By the time of its first archive in December 2008, it was dramatically changed from the initial version, including a new incident log that featured sexual innuendo.
The article also featured a supplemental experiment log, “Experiment Log 619 B”, which recorded items recovered from the jeans other than the usual $3.16.[428]https://web.archive.org/web/20130502043018/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/experiment-log-619-b It was met with general praise.[429]https://web.archive.org/web/20130405083648mp_/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-98947/experiment-log-619-b This log was deleted along with the original in May 2013.
In May 2013, the article had a rating of zero.[430]https://web.archive.org/web/20130502014104/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-619 It was rewritten by Communism Will Win.[431]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-655958/scp-619[432]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-619, rev.0
SCP-001 – Argumentation, Lore, Standards, Attempts
Multiple large and argumentative threads appeared on June 4-6th 2008, regarding the recently locked EditThis slot for SCP-001.[433]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/694756.html, archive[434]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/697022.html, archive[435]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/699949.html[436]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/700144.html[437]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/700370.html[438]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/701468.html[439]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/701832.html[440]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/704087.html[441]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/704970.html[442]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/726440.html[443]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/729303.html Possible definitive proposals were debated with some entry attempts posted, none of which were deemed sufficient. One entry attempted to incorporate an origin story for the Foundation. This thread was contributory for the expectations and standards of the SCP-001, and criticized mainstream cliches as inappropriate for the slot.

Post WikiDot
Thread #809290, posted on July 28th 2008, is the first mention of the new WikiDot on /x/.[447]archive
Apparently the SCP site has moved to a new better one. I’ve checked it out. It’s pretty cool. Here’s the link: http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com.
The same day, another post about general creepypasta used the WikiDot URL to refer to the SCP series.[448]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/809512.html The new WikiDot site is mentioned frequently in August 2008, and references to individual SCPs would hereafter usually be the WikiDot version as opposed to the EditThis link,[449]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/813030.html[450]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/818727.html[451]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/826106.html[452]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/832819.html[453]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/839388.html[454]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/869529.html though EditThis links still appear.[455]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/814493.html[456]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/850147.html[457]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/1082087.html[458]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/1123887.html
Trivia
The oldest surviving SCPs from /x/, in chronological order, are: SCP-173 (“The Sculpture”), SCP-314 (“Motion-Seeking Blade”), SCP-133 (“Instant Hole”), SCP-529 (“Josie the Half-Cat”), SCP-017 (“Shadow Person”), SCP-003 (“The Living Room”), SCP-002 (“Biological Motherboard”).[459]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/446341.xml[460]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/448755.xml
Currently, and besides SCP-173, the oldest surviving SCP from /x/ with the highest upvote rating is SCP-682. The lowest-rated, oldest-surviving is SCP-218 (“Lamprey-Mass Organism”). Both are written by Cog/DrGears.
SCP-003 and SCP-002 were written within 50 minutes of one another.[461]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/448755.xml
Currently (March 2024, subject to change), the average upvote total for all articles that originated on /x/ and that have survived in some form on the SCP Wiki (excluding SCP-173, including rewrites and -ARCs) is around 830 upvotes.
While many early SCP attempts from 4chan’s /x/ introduced innovations that would persist until the modern craft, the initial SCP-176 may be the most innovative of all. It introduced more immersive elements, such as the framing device of a terminal log-in and command input, an rudimentary addendum which fulfilled a narrative role, marked the first use of both “D Class” and “Keter”, and came very close to enacting the first containment breach.[462]https://archive.ph/LZKOU#selection-4083.0-4255.788
The second SCP number mentioned was SCP-398.[463]https://archive.ph/z3QMp#selection-3747.228-3747.241
During an August 2007 /x/ thread about “Untitled 2004”, SCP-173’s image,[464]https://archive.ph/KmpLl the text to SCP-173 is reposted after numerous requests. One anonymous user writes in reply; “..aww that’s it? i was expecting something that would make me shit myself!! *sighs* ah well.. can’t put an expectation that high on an abandoned art project i guess..”[465]https://archive.ph/KmpLl#selection-3149.10-3149.174 There was also a second interpretation of the image about a psychiatric pediatric patient who is mysteriously asphyxiated.[466]https://archive.ph/KmpLl#selection-4121.9-4121.95 This version is praised by one user over the “f****t military one”.[467]https://archive.ph/KmpLl#selection-4379.10-4379.61
In the fifth /x/ thread mentioning/about SCP-173, a user bemoans how common and popular the request is, stating “If I had a nickel for every thread I’ve sen [sic] started in /x/ about this story/picture, I’d have about a quarter. Maybe less. I don’t know, I’m not so good at math.”[468]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/169303.xml This is in fact correct; there were 4 prior threads about SCP-173 to this one, meaning the individual would indeed have one quarter, if paid a nickel per thread.
The original SCP-086 directly catalyzed several more SCP attempts.[469]https://archive.ph/hV3fN It was shortly after the flurry of new content following SCP-086 that the EditThis repository was created & shared on 4chan.[470]https://archive.ph/jmVa6#selection-808.0-997.7
The idea that SCPs are supposed to suspend disbelief is inherited from general expectations from creepypastas, which tried to be believable, at least as hoaxes.[471]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/821978.html Early /x/ readers of SCP frequently debated whether or not they were real/leaked files.[472]e.g. https://archive.is/9lmD0#selection-2202.0-2253.212
As the author of both SCP-002 and SCP-003 was including many cross-references and cross-testing in their works, a anonymous commenter on /x/ asked them to “Stop creating links between SCP objects, it’s better without them and with the links it just seems like Holders 2.0.”[473]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-8259.0-8259.156
Many early SCPs were pop-culture references re-imagined in the SCP format.[474]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-14097.0-14269.93[475]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-14365.9-14365.50[476]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-9925.0-9925.282[477]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-15569.10-15569.75[478]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-19999.0-20257.69[479]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/821453.html, “SCP-998” Some of these would be relegated to the “Joke” section of EditThis, not because they were felt to be funny, but because they were felt to be poorly written.[480]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2699.0-2699.262
Early /x/ SCPs featured the idea of progressive gender philosophy on numerous occasions. In addition to the initial version of SCP-113 (“The Gender Bender”), an early version of SCP-042 mentions, “042 cannot tell the difference between a woman and a man of nontraditional gender roll”.[481]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-22651.1052-22651.1138
The initial /x/ version of SCP-042 featured the daughter of an O5 member as its caretaker, and was introduced with the line: “There, now theres a loli running around.”[482]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-22594.0-22645.50
The first (tongue-in-cheek) format screw was arguably an initial “SCP-134”, posted to /x/ on January 23, 2008. It read:[483]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-6831.0-6831.136
“431-PCS rof serudecorp tnemniatnoc laicepS
em pleh enoemos esaelp no gniog si tahw dog ho eb ot sraeppa 431-PCS”
The initial SCP-014 was a dinner fork that hadn’t been cleaned since the 1890s. It’s described as seemingly mundane and that “if it is possessed of any extra-ordinary qualities, these are known only to those in the very highest echelon of this projects coordinators, whose representatives assure us that 014 is, quote “Very Important”. Officers who have spent time alone with SCP-014 are unanimous in their appreciation that the object is of great significance (hence its continued presence at this site)… Any personnel observed attempting to compromise 014 in any way are to be shot on sight.”[484]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-2147.0-2147.1646 This is perhaps the only use of the “seems to be” on /x/ that is technically correct based on modern writing conventions.
A la Dr Gears, the first “clockwork” SCP was a duplicate SCP-003 on 4chan’s /x/, a clockwork silkworm that had to be fed “*exactly* 888 grains of rice every 2.30 hours”.[485]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-3347.0-3347.1975
The initial SCP-887’s main character’s name was “James Pedobearingson”.[486]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-5209.556-5209.583
Typographical errors present in /x/ threads which accidentally left in prior SCP numbers suggest that /x/ users were literally copying and pasting written SCP entries, in order to vary it and make it their own.[487]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-8409.0-8409.135
Early SCPs were very occupied with containment chamber temperature control.[488]https://archive.vn/1jSvG
The initial version of SCP-036 (non-viable) was the first example of a neutralized anomaly, and with “Previous Special Containment Procedures”.[489]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9737.10-9737.193[490]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-9909.316-9909.457
The first documented attempt at SCP-001 was a Keter class object.[491]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10855.1227-10855.1258 It was not received well.[492]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-13239.0-13239.151
The initial SCP-754 was written by user “GhostPenis”.[493]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-11455.0-11481.10
SCP-946 was an early SCP that received a lot of praise in-thread.[494]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-11817.0-12111.71
The author of SCP-294 “The Coffee Machine”, Arc, appeared in an /x/ thread sharing the idea, and posted it to the EditThis Wiki that day or the next.[495]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10167.0-10167.269 They are quoted as saying the “cup of joe” bit was “concentrated fail.”[496]https://archive.vn/6HuM6#selection-451.0-451.264
The initial SCP-640 was the first to use the phrase/terminology “XK class scenario”. [497]https://web.archive.org/web/20080817055320/https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-640[498]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-640 SCP-004 on EditThis cross-linked to this version of SCP-640.[499]https://web.archive.org/web/20080410103016/http://editthis.info/SCP_wiki/SCP-004[500]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/scp-004, rev. 28
Many rules for the SCP Series were established in order to keep it from being like The Holders.[501]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/498832.html
SCP-004 (“The 12 Rusty Keys and the Door”) began as a SCP-001 proposal.[502]https://archive.vn/SHysQ It was initially written in a very creepypasta-like fashion. After numerous revisions on EditThis, it still retained lines that are far from modern standards, such as this passage referencing Cthulu:
“Appendix A: Mental Health Effects of Key 11: All Class D personnel sent through portal 11 using the 11th key come back in a catatonic state unable to speak if at all. Some may have enough energy left to try to claw out their eyes. Of the 16 subjects, only 4 came back. Only one was able to speak again eventually after massive psychotherapy. He was able to tell the psychiatrist that he saw a massive, green creature. He couldn’t see much of it except for it’s betentacled face. In its presence he said he felt a innate fear and sudden recognition as if of something buried deep in his ancestral fears. In that instant the subject claims his mind was raped and horrible memories of a past he couldn’t even comprehend were ejaculated into his fragile human mind. The subject shows an inability to remember anything except the images burned into his mind by the creature in portal 11.”
The final archived version of SCP-004 cross-linked SCP-529, with the posterior half of the cat found inside.[503]https://web.archive.org/web/20080813071118/http://editthis.info/SCP_wiki/SCP-004 The cross-reference existed until WikiDot.[504]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-582448
SCP-004 was written on a lunch break.[505]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-4886364
As “an SCP that could contain other SCPs”, SCP-004 was a prototype-Thaumiel.[506]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-76555/scp-004#post-4086103
The author of SCP-017 was anonymous on /x/. In March 2020, a known WikiDot user and SCP author Reixis/CityToast posted in the SCP-017 discussion, sharing a photo of an old notebook from 2008 that had the original SCP-017 text in it.[507]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-85262/scp-017#post-4561972[508]https://archive.vn/TwuKg The user had been a member since 2012, and hadn’t realized that SCP-017 was the same SCP-017 they posted way back on 4chan.
The first documented (full) SCP-001 slot was prefaced with the suggestion “feel free to change the designation to 004”.[509]https://archive.vn/1jSvG#selection-10804.0-10855.158 SCP-004 itself was first posted as a SCP-001 proposal.[510]https://archive.vn/SHysQ#selection-249.0-279.153
The first use of “Object Class:” was in January 2008 on /x/. The class was “Trinity (scientific)” and does not exist in modern object classes.[511]https://archive.ph/QNbYp#selection-10355.127-10355.164
By May 2008, /x/ had grown tired and/or resentful of the SCP series.[512]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/593014.html, http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/597383.html Alternatives and returns-to-form were suggested as predecessors, such as the short-lived “Annex 0” which replaced anomalous objects with prisoners, and altered formats in the SCP style, including SQP (“Special Quarantine Procedures”, meant to eradicate anomalies rather than contain them).[513]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/586098.html[514]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/696291.html[515]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/743793.html[516]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/804068.html, archive (The creator of the SQP spin-off posted the first 6 entries sequentially, including “SQP-001”.)
The TroyL rewrite of SCP-224 on WikiDot changed the object class to “Temporus” by a user wishing to test the limits of the classification system,[517]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-1997385 which was met with confusion in the comments.[518]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-1936904[519]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-1944469 One user, in 2014, comments: “Someone is treating our classification system too liberally.”[520]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-81141/scp-224#post-1981374
Experiment Log 619 B (non-viable) mentioned “Dr. King”, who was given apple seeds, and this was pointed out in the comment section.[521]https://web.archive.org/web/20130502043018/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/experiment-log-619-b[522]https://web.archive.org/web/20130405083648mp_/http://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-98947/experiment-log-619-b
SCP and The Holders were commonly pitted against one another in “which is better” poll threads.[523]e.g. http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/662736.html
An anonymous poster in a May 31st thread on /x/ about scary movies wrote, “Just the idea of a statue that can move frightens the life out of me, hence why i wrote that SCP.”[524]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/683881.html, archive Many early SCPs on /x/ were statues, and so this statement does not guarantee the SCP referenced is SCP-173, or that this is Moto42.
In June 2008, /x/ had a Jeopardy-style thread with the category /x/-related material and themes. SCP is one of the “answers”.[525]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/724060.html
The SCP Series was called “pretentious” as early as June 2008 on /x/.[526]https://archive.ph/RJbkB#selection-4826.0-4901.7
Before “Shark Punching Center”, the first backronym given to the “SPC” typo was “Super Poop Cat”, on — unsurprisingly — /x/.[527]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/726440.html, archive
The first SCP-1004 (“The Delicious Cake”, on EditThis) featured a recipe for baking a cake.[528]http://web.archive.org/web/20080613165541/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/SCP-1004 A 4chan user (“MadameStoryteller”) reportedly followed the recipe and baked it, noting that it was “delicious”, and even shared a picture of it.[529]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/728224.html
SCP-173 was suggested as the mascot for /x/, among other candidates.[530]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/796967.html
The trope of “sentient anomaly that resents being referred to by their designation number” is as old as SCPs posted to /x/.[531]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/799311.xml, archive
Deusprogrammer can be seen taking credit for SCP-004 in /x/ thread #800825.[532]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/800825.html, archive
In thread #813030, Moto42 (as “USS Walrus”) can be seen commenting on an SCP-related thread on /x/ shortly after the creation of the WikiDot.[533]https://archive.ph/1fgMl#selection-838.0-935.7, https://archive.ph/1fgMl#selection-1046.0-1125.7 It was possibly the exposure to the links herein to the new wiki that prompted him to comment famously on the new forum.[534]https://scp-wiki.wikidot.com/forum/t-77831/wow-i-never-expected-this, archive
A comment on EditThis reports that a link to the Wiki was shared on the /sh/ board.[535]http://web.archive.org/web/20080410225129/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP_Series, archive
Early joke articles were placed there for being either poor quality or because they were “reserved for items that are impossible simply because there are no gods insane enough to let that kind of irony exist.” An “Ambiguous” category was proposed for controversial articles that were somewhere between MainList articles and Jokes.[536]http://web.archive.org/web/20080410225129/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP_Series, archive
The only -J article to survive from the 4chan/EditThis era is SCP-014-J, written by “OOPart Expert (Having misplaced 216+ artifacts)”.[537]https://web.archive.org/web/20080806084747/http://www.editthis.info/scp_wiki/Continue_on#Joke_SCPs[538]http://scpclassic.wikidot.com/editthis-scps#joke[539]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/453291.html This makes it the oldest -J on the site. The author of the original SCP-014 (“a fork”) wrote on the article’s discussion page about how they didn’t intend it to be a joke, but something profound. Regarding this entry, the original author states:[540]https://web.archive.org/web/20080430052131/https://editthis.info/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-014
“Hey guys, hows it going. It’s been a while since I submitted this, which, so far, is my only contribution, and I’ve gotten mixed reviews, namely positive from the guy above and negative on /x/ (fagets). Regardless, it got a mention in the SCP guidelines section which is something I guess I can be proud of. When I wrote this though, I never intended for it to be a joke, though I appreciate and wouldn’t want to change its psuedo-status as one. My idea, which I had since I first read #173, was for mundane-seeming object under low security that wasn’t powerful or dangerous, but just immensely and cosmically significant somehow. Maybe it was the only constant between an infinite number of universes or something, I don’t know, I wanted to leave that up to the reader. I know I didn’t get that across very well, basically because I didn’t write nearly as much as I thought I would. I do want to finish this one some time though, go on to describe the room it’s kept in, etc. and I ‘ll try to soon. Keep up the good work, guys.”
The author signed their name “##00Part Expert (Having misplaced 219+ artefacts)##”, a handle that can be seen participating in many SCP-themed threads on /x./[541]http://web.archive.org/web/20080430052131/http://editthis.info:80/scp_wiki/Talk:SCP-014
After the initial SCP-338 was ARC’d, user Scantron/Communism will win rewrote it. They posted a pastebin to this rewrite; it doesn’t seem to have ever been accepted.[542]https://pastebin.com/WkDN7cAN
Quotes
“If there’s one thing I hate about /x/, it’s the fact that everything has to be raped into being a shitty series. First holders, now this. Frankly, it’s annoying.”[543]https://archive.ph/WXELA#selection-6160.1-6213.186
“I think that “it’s yours, have fun with it” isn’t a good approach. /x/ is a community effort of people who like shitting bri/x/ and should help each other by giving good constructive criticism.”[544]https://archive.ph/SQJDm#selection-1929.30-1929.223
“It’s like the Holders series, but instead of teaching you how to find some freaky shit, it details people that have already found freaky shit.”[545]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/673364.html
“Holders should take a lesson from its little brother, SCP.”[546]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/674843.html
“No, but that’s the point. There is no “official” backstory. although it would be cool if well-written… it would destroy the shady, disturbing nature of the SCP organization (which has never really been named come to think of it, since SCP = Special Containment Procedures…)”[547]https://archive.ph/3QlpV#selection-11559.30-11559.431
“No self-respecting writer would visit 4chan in the first place, let alone take interest in the SCP series, you idiot.”[548]https://archive.ph/3QlpV#selection-22009.36-22009.153 — Anonymous user on /x/
“SCP Series: Like the holders series only called SCP Series.”[549]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/695383.xml — Anonymous user on /x/
“Were all the SCP Entries written by /x/? As I haven’t lurked here much before now, I find it hard to believe stuff that awesome could emerge from here, no offense to those of you who aren’t dumbshits”[550]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/695383.xml — Anonymous user on /x/
“I swear, these would be so much better if people used proper grammar and spelling to make it appear as though actual researchers wrote them.”[551]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/696291.xml User LDB, on /x/
“The whole SCP series is a story made to entertain people. You mean it needs to be believable? Well, DUH.”[552]https://archive.ph/1QlxE#selection-3356.0-3407.149 — Anonymous user on /x/
“Also, writing style of the SCP series has become stagnant and un-mindfuck like. Too much effort goes into scientific/technical wording. What made the first SCP great was how much it subtly left to the reader’s imagination (and how closely the image worked with the text).”[553]https://archive.ph/1QlxE#selection-14451.46-14451.317 — Anonymous user on /x/, June 2008
“What I see in most boring SCPs is a style that just blacks out everything. Imagination is what makes a mindfuck, but imagination has to have something to latch onto. I think that some specifics are necessary to really illicit terror. They shouldn’t be a scientific explanation of the object, because that removes the unknown, but maybe the history of the object instead. For example, if someone wanted to make an SCP that was a sentient particle accelerator, you would just describe a few towns that it had destroyed, and the effects that it had there. That way, the object’s true mechanics are still veiled, but it’s power is revealed. I think the worst kind of SCP is one… which blacks out so much that it’s boring.”[554]https://archive.ph/1QlxE#selection-14486.0-14537.997 — Anonymous user on /x/
“I was stopped being a fan of SCP when they decided to write more than one.”[555]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/719431.html — Anonymous user on /x/

“I think it would be awesome if the story sounded as though it were written by somebody who seemed a bit more like a hardened, emotionless badass (as this is how most SCP tales are crafted to sound).”[557]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/730454.html — Anonymous user on /x/

“Creepypasta that pretends not to be fiction, but a relic of the story itself, to make it seem more real for extra brickshitting effect. I think this type is kind of rare. Examples: SCP series, Scientist’s Log”[559]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/836146.html — Anonymous user on /x/
“This is what you get when you try too hard. Why the hell would an organization trying to keep these things out of the normal world make a fucking website about it? It destroys the whole secret organization feel. Way to hijack and ruin someone else’s good idea. I always guessed SCP was an acronym for “Special Containment Protocol”, by the way. Their interpretation is apparently “to Secure, Contain, and Protect.” They made it a slogan.”[560]http://scparchives.bluesoul.net/x/scp/865902.html — Anonymous user on /x/
